How to Prepare: Training Prep

It's hard to believe September is already here and the first Polaris-led training sessions will begin in just over a week! Are you ready? We know we are!

On Wednesday, we spoke with our Polaris Training Consultant, Michelle, who provided some tips on what to prepare for a better hands-on training experience. Below is a list of items that are recommended for each participant to bring to the Polaris-led training sessions, broken down by course. (Throwback to school supply lists!)

For Circulation and Public Services training:

  • 2 or 3 unused patron barcodes

  • Photocopies of 10 items ( a variety of books, CDs, DVDs/BluRays, etc.)

  • Photocopy the page, cover, or part of the case that includes the barcode

  • These items should be older, from at least a year ago, to ensure they are in the system

  • 2 or 3 empty item barcodes (check with your technical services department if needed)

For Cataloging training:

  • 3 or 4 empty item barcodes

  • Photocopies of 2 or 3 new books for cataloging (photocopy the title page) purchased in the last month

  • Optional : 5 - 25 MARC records for new materials (from the last few weeks), only if you are interested in testing out cataloging these materials

For Acquisitions training:

  • A list of new materials to be purchased

For Serials training:

  • 2 or 3 different serials titles with different publication patterns

All Polaris-led training sessions will take place at the CCS office in Arlington Heights (3355 N Arlington Heights Rd, Suite J). Training sessions will start at 9:00am and end at 4:00pm. Participants should plan on bringing their own lunch (the fridge is available for perishable food) or purchasing lunch (here is a list of nearby lunch spots). Participants will be sent a reminder email with this information before each session. If you have any questions, please contact Debra (847-483-8595) or Mieko (847-483-8956).
