How to Prepare: PAC Upgrade to HTTPS
Updated 2/1/19 with time/date of upgrade.
Updated 2/6/19 to clarify library changes.
Updated 2/7/19 to add Google Analytics info.
CCS and Polaris will be upgrading the PowerPAC to a secure https connection. Pages containing sensitive information, such as the My Record page, already use a secure https connection. The PAC upgrade will affect currently non-secure pages, like the catalog home page. The upgrade will take place Monday, February 11th between 6:00am - 7:00am.
CCS upgraded the training PAC in November 2018 to spot any potential performance issues and identify changes that will need to be made by CCS staff and library staff when we update production.
There will be a redirect from the unsecured site to the secured https site.
CCS will check and modify...
System Administration settings
Content URLs, including URLs for portal custom content and web parts.
Enriched Data settings
What should libraries check and modify?
1. Google Analytics
CCS will update Google Analytics for libraries using the shared CCS account. Libraries who maintain their own Google Analytics accounts will want to update the default URL for the PAC in settings. The setting can be found under Admin -> Property Settings -> Default URL. This page provides screenshots for reference.
We anticipate the redirect forwarding all http traffic to the https site. Even if the listed changes are not made, patrons, staff, and resources will all be redirected to the https PAC.
In the event the redirect fails, the libraries should consider the following modifications:
1. Search boxes on Websites
Do a find-and-replace for "http://ccs.polarislibrary" to "https://ccs.polarislibrary" on your website. This should adjust both catalog search boxes and any deep links you may have. In general, the redirect should take care for forwarding any http traffic to the updated site. However, performing the find-and-replace will prevent potential issues in case the redirect is not working or if there is a lag.
2. LibraryAware Admin Settings
If your library has custom carousels from LibraryAware, you will need to adjust a couple URLs in your LibraryAware admin settings. To locate these URLs, navigate into your LibraryAware admin page. The URLs can be found under Account Management -> Basic Settings, under the section, "Catalog Linking." Update the URLs to https.
Example: Author/Title Catalog Link Format
Existing - - http://ccs.polarislibrary.com/polaris/view.....
Change to - - https://ccs.polarislibrary.com/polaris/view....
3. Ordering Tools
Some material vendors, like Baker & Taylor, have an option to link to a PAC search for a specific item so you can check if your library already owns it. The location of catalog search settings will differ from vendor to vendor, but will most likely be found under administrative settings. Just as with LibraryAware, change any instance of "http://ccs.polarislibrary..." to "https://ccs.polarislibrary...."
WorldCat links directly to libraries' PACs. If WorldCat users are trying to locate/view holdings for a specific title, they can click into the PowerPAC. Libraries can modify the PAC deep links in their OCLC Service Configuration page. Instructions on how to configure the Service Configuration settings can be found on the PowerPAC Procedures page, "Configuring OCLC Deep Links." **Important Note! The format of the deep links has been revised.
5. Other Resources and Promotional Materials
Staff should keep their eyes open for the PAC URL in other sources, such as social media account bios, Google Analytics accounts, and promotional materials.
When should libraries make the modifications?
The PowerPAC update requires a system reset. In order to minimize impact on libraries and patrons, the update will occur Monday, February 11th between 6:00am - 7:00am. Again, we anticipate the redirect forwarding all http traffic to the https site. Even if the listed changes are not made, patrons, staff, and resources will all be redirected to the https PAC.
As libraries create new materials/resources or perform maintenance on their current resources and websites, they should be updating links to https.
CCS will send an update on the schedule as it becomes available. Please email email@example.com or open a help ticket if you have any questions!
